Common Causes of Impotency (Erectile Dysfunction)

Impotency is often used as another word to describe a man who suffers from a condition called erectile dysfunction (ED). There are a variety of reasons why a man may suffer from this condition as well as other sexual problems.

Some of the most common causes are explained below:

  • Extreme amounts of distress such as while in financial or emotional relation turmoil can lead to a weak erection. This is because stress slows blood circulation and prevents adequate blood flow to the penis.
  • Diabetes is a condition that often leads to erectile dysfunction. This is a condition that has an affect on the way the circulatory system works and cannot be treated just by using ED medications. The disease itself versus the ED needs to be addressed.
  • Eating too heavy of foods and too big of meals can often lead to impotency. That is because more blood is required to digest these higher-fat and starchy substances. This leaves less blood to the chambers of the penis and less chance of producing an erection.
  • Men who smoke and men who use alcohol on a regular basis also lose their urge to have sex. They usually cannot get or sustain an erection and they may also have a very low sex drive if at all.
  • Sometimes an overdose or excess use of medications can lead to impotency. For instance, if a person is on prescription anti-depressants and is also taking allergy medications and pain killers. A man can become too “drugged up” even when taking safe amounts of certain pills and this causes sexual dysfunction.
  • A man who has recently undergone a surgery may lose some sexual desire. This often happens in cases such as when a man deals with cancer and urinary bladder infections.

A Different Perspective

One way to examine causes of impotency is from an Ayurvedic perspective. You may have heard of the three “doshas” before (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). This refers to the way the body aligns itself and proper balance is achieved.

When any one of these three bodily systems is not in proper balance or when all three doshas are not aligned it causes impotency. It could lead to problems other problems as well.

For instance, such as dried seminal ejaculation, decreased sperm volume, sticky seminal discharge, or excess sperm discharge and excess sperm count. It could lead to premature ejaculation or inability to ejaculate as well as permanent erectile dysfunction.
